What is answer engine optimisation (AEO)?
Answer engine optimisation is the practice of being the source an answer engine uses. What counts as an answer engine, how AEO relates to GEO and SEO, and what the work involves.
The short answer
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is structuring content so it becomes the source an answer engine uses. An answer engine is any surface returning a direct answer rather than links: AI assistants, AI Overviews, snippets and voice.
The definition, in full
Answer engine optimisation starts from a change in what a search surface returns. For twenty years the output of a query was a list, and the user chose from it. Increasingly the output is a single composed answer, and the user does not choose at all. AEO is the work of being the source that answer is built from.
The term predates the current AI assistants. It was originally used for featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants, all of which return one answer rather than ten links. AI assistants extended the same pattern to almost every query, which is why the term has been revived.
The practical definition we use: content is AEO-ready when a machine can lift one self-contained passage from it and have that passage completely answer the question, correctly, without any other context from the page. How that differs from ordinary SEO is worth being precise about.
What counts as an answer engine
The list matters because the same content discipline serves all of them. A page that answers the question in a clean opening passage performs better on every surface in that table, which makes AEO unusually good value: one change, six surfaces. The mechanics differ most on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which are separate surfaces inside Search.
| Surface | Returns | What it selects |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity | A composed answer, sometimes with links | A small retrieved set of passages |
| Google Gemini | A composed answer, sources one step away | Passages grounded in Google Search |
| Google AI Overviews | A generated summary above the results | Passages from pages already ranking |
| Google AI Mode | A conversation, fanned out into sub-searches | Passages matching each narrow sub-question |
| Featured snippets | One extracted passage | A single paragraph, list or table |
| Voice assistants | One spoken answer | A short, unambiguous passage |
What the work involves
Answer first, qualify second
State the answer in the first two sentences of a section, then add the caveats and detail. Most business writing does the opposite, building to a conclusion, which is exactly the wrong shape for extraction.
One question per section
A section that answers three questions cannot be extracted for any of them. Split it.
Self-contained passages
A paragraph that starts "as we saw above" is unusable out of context. Every passage should stand alone, even at the cost of some repetition.
Question-shaped headings
Headings phrased as the question a buyer would ask, in their words, rather than as an internal label.
Structured data that matches the content
FAQPage and Article markup that reflects what is actually on the page, following Google’s structured data guidance. Schema that describes content the page does not contain is worse than none.
Tables for genuinely tabular things
Comparisons, specifications, pricing tiers. Answer engines extract tables readily, and prose descriptions of tabular data extract badly.
Where AEO stops
AEO is a content discipline, and content discipline alone does not get you cited. It determines whether you are usable once retrieved. It does not determine whether you are retrieved.
That second question is decided largely off your site, on the review platforms, community threads and publisher round-ups that carry most citations in B2B SaaS. A perfectly structured page on a site nothing retrieves is a perfectly structured page nobody reads.
Our position
We treat AEO as necessary and insufficient. It is the cheapest part of the work and the part most agencies sell as the whole. Getting the content right and then not addressing where citations actually come from is the single most common way a well-run programme produces no result.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
No, but the overlap is real and worth being honest about. Good SEO content practice already favours clear structure and direct answers. What AEO adds is the constraint that a passage must work with no surrounding context, which changes how you write far more than it changes what you write about.
Should we do AEO or GEO?
They are not alternatives. AEO is the content layer; GEO is the whole discipline including retrieval, entity clarity, off-site citation sources and measurement. Doing AEO alone is a common and expensive mistake, and our generative engine optimisation service is scoped around that.
Does AEO help conventional rankings?
Usually yes, as a side effect. Content that answers a question directly tends to satisfy the query, and featured snippets are won the same way. It is a reasonable secondary benefit but a poor primary justification.
