How to show up in AI Overviews when you already rank

You rank on page one and a competitor is in the overview. The five reasons that happens, in the order they are worth checking, and what to do about each.

The short answer

If you rank well and a competitor is in the overview, it is almost always one of five things: Google-Extended blocking you, a buried answer, a stale page, a passage that needs context, or a query rewarding another source type.

Check Google-Extended first

This takes two minutes and resolves a meaningful share of cases. Google-Extended governs whether your content can be used to ground Google's AI surfaces. Blocking it removes you from AI Overviews and from Gemini while leaving your conventional rankings entirely intact, which is exactly the symptom being described.

It is frequently set as a training opt-out by someone acting reasonably on incomplete information, and then never revisited. Open your robots.txt and look before doing anything else; ours is published with a line per agent, and Google lists what each crawler controls.

Then check where your answer sits on the page

Selection is passage-level. Open the page that ranks and find the paragraph that answers the query. If it is below the fold, after a preamble about why the topic matters, or split across two sections, that is very likely the whole problem.

The fix is unglamorous: move the answer to the opening passage of its section, state it plainly in two sentences, and put the qualification after. You are not rewriting the page, you are reordering it. That is the core of answer engine optimisation.

Then check whether the page is current

Comparison, pricing and tooling content is re-retrieved frequently, and a page with last year's numbers loses to one with this year's even when the older page ranks higher.

Look for dated specifics: pricing, product names, integration lists, version numbers, market figures. Any of these being stale is enough to lose the citation.

Then check for context dependence

A passage that reads perfectly in place can be unusable in isolation. Phrases like "as we covered above", "this approach", "the second option" and "as mentioned" all break extraction, because the extracted passage no longer means anything.

Read the answering paragraph on its own, out loud, with no other context. If it does not stand up, that is a fixable reason you are not being pulled.

Finally, check what type of source the query rewards

Some queries consistently pull from review platforms, some from community threads, some from publisher round-ups. If the overview for your query is citing three review sites and a forum, no amount of on-site restructuring will get a vendor page into that set. That work belongs in review platform strategy and community presence.

That is not a failure, it is a diagnosis. It means the work for that query belongs in the citation-sources programme rather than on your website.

Our position

We check these five in this order because it is roughly the order of cost. The first four are hours of work. The fifth is a quarter of work, and knowing it is the fifth rather than the first saves a great deal of wasted effort.

Frequently asked questions

We rank first and are still not cited. Is that normal?

Yes. Ranking first gives you candidacy, not inclusion. Selection is passage-level, so a lower-ranked page with a cleaner answer routinely wins the citation. How to rank in AI Overviews works through the sequence.

Should we create a separate page just for the overview?

Usually not. A thin page created to capture an overview tends not to rank, and ranking is the prerequisite. Improving the page that already ranks is nearly always the better move, and our free AI visibility audit will tell you which pages those are.
