ChatGPT Ads Hit 60+ Countries. Budget a Test Now.
OpenAI took ChatGPT Ads into seven more Asian markets on 23 September 2026, pushing availability past 60 countries and $1bn in annualised run rate inside 200 days. For SaaS growth teams, the action is a small, measured test and a branded-search lift baseline, not a budget shift.

If you run paid media for a SaaS business, put a small line item for chatgpt ads in next quarter's plan and, more importantly, get a branded-search baseline recorded before you spend a penny. OpenAI announced on 23 September 2026 that ChatGPT Ads is rolling out across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, taking availability past 60 countries. The channel stopped being an experiment somewhere around the point it hit $1bn in annualised revenue run rate.
Here is the part that matters for your number. Answer-engine inventory is following the same curve every auction-based channel has followed: cheap and uncontested early, efficient in the middle, expensive and table-stakes at the end. The teams that did well out of paid search in 2006 and paid social in 2014 were not the ones with better creative. They were the ones already running when everyone else arrived.
What OpenAI actually announced on 23 September 2026
ChatGPT Ads expanded to seven additional markets across Asia. OpenAI's announcement of the Southeast Asia and Taiwan expansion follows earlier Asia Pacific launches in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and India.
Advertisers get in through four doors: OpenAI's own Ads Solutions team, agency partners including dentsu, Havas Media, Omnicom Media, Publicis Groupe and WPP, technology partners, and self-service via the OpenAI Ads Manager for eligible businesses. That self-service route is the one growth teams should care about, because it means you do not need a holding company relationship to run a £5k test.
Ads appear only for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free. Hold that thought, because it reshapes who you can actually reach.
Why the reach limit changes your ICP maths
Your enterprise buyers are disproportionately on paid ChatGPT plans. Your prosumer, startup and SMB buyers are disproportionately not. So ads on ChatGPT currently skew towards the lower end of your customer base and towards individual researchers inside larger companies who have not been given a corporate seat.
For a product-led SaaS with a self-serve tier, that is a decent match. For an enterprise platform with a £60k average contract value and a nine-month cycle, the reachable audience is thinner than the headline "60+ countries" suggests. Size the test accordingly.
We would not move meaningful budget out of Google Search to fund this. Branded and high-intent non-brand search on Google still converts at rates chatgpt paid ads have no published benchmark to match. OpenAI has not released conversion or cost data by vertical, and we will not pretend otherwise.
How ads in ChatGPT work, and what they cannot do
OpenAI's published ads principles set four constraints worth memorising. Conversations are kept private from advertisers. Customer data is not sold. Ads are clearly labelled and separate from ChatGPT's answers. Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
That last one is the important line for anyone hoping to buy their way into a recommendation. You cannot. Paid placement and organic citation inside ChatGPT are two separate problems that need two separate programmes, which is why we treat organic search, AEO and GEO and paid search and conversion as one job measured against one pipeline number, not as rival budgets.
The other structural point: people arrive in ChatGPT mid-task. OpenAI describes users explaining what they want to accomplish, what matters to them and the constraints they face. That is closer to a discovery call than a keyword. Creative written like a Google RSA headline will underperform creative written like a useful answer.
Where chatgpt ads sit against your existing channels
The table below compares the three things a SaaS growth team is choosing between when it considers openai chatgpt ads, using only what each provider has published.
| Route | How you get in | Who sees it | Influences the answer? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Ads (paid) | Ads Manager self-service, OpenAI Ads Solutions, agency or technology partners | ChatGPT Free and Go users, 60+ countries | No. OpenAI states ads do not influence answers |
| Organic citation in ChatGPT | Content and entity work, no purchase available | All plans, including Plus, Pro and Enterprise | Yes, that is the mechanism |
| Google Search and AI Overviews | Google Ads auction plus organic | All Google users | Ads labelled separately from organic results |
The rollout timeline tells you how fast this is moving
Three dates from OpenAI's own announcements show the pace. Late August 2026: the $1bn annualised run rate disclosure, with tens of thousands of advertisers running ads chatgpt campaigns, many across multiple countries. 16 September 2026: the "Reimagining advertising with AI" product post. 23 September 2026: seven new Asian markets and the 60-country milestone.
That is three material announcements in roughly five weeks. OpenAI also said it will keep expanding into new markets and building new formats, optimisation tools and measurement solutions over the next few months.
| Stage | Value |
|---|---|
| APAC markets named before 23 Sep | 5 |
| APAC markets added 23 Sep | 7 |
| Total countries with ChatGPT Ads | 60 |
What to do this quarter, and what to skip
Do three things. First, your measurement lead sets a 90-day pre-period baseline for branded search volume, direct traffic and self-reported attribution before any spend starts. Without that, you will never prove assisted lift, and assisted lift is where this channel will earn its keep. Our view on why last-click will fail you here is set out in our measurement and attribution work.
Second, add "ChatGPT" or "AI assistant" as an option on your demo request form's "how did you hear about us" field. It is a five-minute change and it will be the most honest data you get for the next year.
Third, cap the test. One market, one product line, one quarter, a budget you would not miss. Check availability in your markets on OpenAI's Ads Manager availability list first, because the country list has moved repeatedly through 2026.
What we would skip: hiring a dedicated chatgpt ads agency, rebuilding creative workflows, or chasing chatgpt shopping ads formats if you sell B2B software. Those are answers to problems you do not have yet. Equally, do not confuse buying inventory with earning visibility, which is a different staircase entirely, as our data on brand mentions in AI search sets out.
The honest read on chatgpt ads for B2B SaaS in 2026
Treat chatgpt ads as a cheap option on a channel that may matter a great deal in eighteen months, not as a line item that needs to perform this quarter. The cost of being early is a small test budget and some measurement plumbing. The cost of being late is buying into a mature auction with no first-party data on what works for your category. We know which of those we would rather explain to a board.
