How these are measured

SaaS brands served:
n = 30 SaaS brands. company inception to August 2026. Count of distinct SaaS companies under a signed advisory agreement. Excludes one-off audits, workshops and prospect calls.
Years in-house experience:
n = 1 founding team. 2015 to 2026. Cumulative years spent in salaried, in-house growth and marketing roles at SaaS companies before founding Surge45.
AI assistants tracked:
n = 6 assistants. current monitoring coverage. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok, plus the AI Overviews and AI Mode surfaces inside Google Search. A coverage fact, not a performance claim.
Growth pillars, one system:
n = 4 pillars. current advisory model. Discover, Convert, Attribute and Grow. A structural fact about how the advisory is organised, not a performance claim.
Retrieval mechanism

Live X data is the distinguishing input

Grok has real-time access to X. That is the mechanism that makes it different, and it is the only reason it warrants a page of its own. Current conversation about your brand, your category and your competitors is an input to its answers in a way that has no equivalent on the other platforms.

The consequence is a different time constant. Where the other assistants respond to content and authority work over weeks and months, Grok responds to what is being said now. A product launch, an outage, a funding round or a critical thread can be reflected in its answers within hours.

It also inherits X's tone and X's biases. Answers are less hedged than the other assistants, and the sentiment in the underlying conversation surfaces more directly. That cuts both ways, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Crawler policy

Which crawler does what, and what blocking it costs you

Training crawlers and retrieval crawlers are different things. Blocking a retrieval crawler removes you from the answers. Blocking a training crawler does not. Getting the two confused is the most common self-inflicted AI visibility problem we find.

User agentPurposeWhat blocking it costs you
X / xAI crawlersRetrievalxAI's published crawler documentation is thinner than its peers'. We monitor it and configure directives as they are published, rather than guessing at user-agent strings.

Our own policy is published at surge45.com/robots.txt, with a line per agent and the reasoning in the file. If we are going to advise on crawler policy, our own should be readable.

Citation behaviour

How Grok forms an answer

Grok blends training knowledge, web results and live X conversation. The X component is what makes it distinctive and what makes it volatile: the same question can get materially different answers a week apart if the conversation has moved.

For SaaS categories with an active practitioner community on X, this is a genuine channel. For categories with no meaningful presence there, Grok largely falls back to behaviour resembling the other assistants, and there is little platform-specific work worth doing.

That makes the first question a qualifying one rather than a tactical one: does your category actually happen on X? If it does not, we would rather tell you that than build you a programme.

What moves it

Observed to change Grok visibility

  • Genuine presence in the X conversation

Practitioners, founders and engineers discussing the category. Not brand broadcasting, which is visible as such and does not carry.

  • Being talked about at moments that matter

Launches, comparisons, incidents. The real-time component means these have outsized and short-lived influence.

  • Correcting live misinformation quickly

A wrong claim in a widely-shared thread reaches Grok answers within hours. On other platforms you have weeks. Here you have a day.

What does not

Sold for Grok, and not worth buying

  • Buying engagement

Inauthentic amplification is detectable, and the reputational downside on a public platform exceeds any visibility upside.

  • Building a Grok programme without a category presence on X

If your buyers are not there, the distinguishing input does not apply and Grok is not worth separate work.

Working together

What we do on Grok

  1. 1Qualify first: assess whether your category has real conversation on X before proposing any work.
  2. 2If it does, map who is already shaping it and what is currently being said.
  3. 3Monitor Grok answers on a shorter cycle than the other platforms, because they move faster.
  4. 4Build a rapid-correction process for factual errors circulating in live threads.
  5. 5Report Grok separately, because its volatility would otherwise distort the trend on everything else.
