Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) for SaaS

AEO is the work of structuring content so it becomes the source an answer engine uses. An answer engine is any surface that returns a direct answer rather than a list: AI assistants, AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice. One content discipline serves all of them, which makes this the cheapest part of AI search work and the part most often sold as though it were the whole thing.

The numbers, with their working

What we can actually evidence.

30+
SaaS brands served
10+
Years in-house experience
6
AI assistants tracked
4
Growth pillars, one system

How these are measured

SaaS brands served:
n = 30 SaaS brands. company inception to August 2026. Count of distinct SaaS companies under a signed advisory agreement. Excludes one-off audits, workshops and prospect calls.
Years in-house experience:
n = 1 founding team. 2015 to 2026. Cumulative years spent in salaried, in-house growth and marketing roles at SaaS companies before founding Surge45.
AI assistants tracked:
n = 6 assistants. current monitoring coverage. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok, plus the AI Overviews and AI Mode surfaces inside Google Search. A coverage fact, not a performance claim.
Growth pillars, one system:
n = 4 pillars. current advisory model. Discover, Convert, Attribute and Grow. A structural fact about how the advisory is organised, not a performance claim.
The challenge

The gaps quietly costing you pipeline.

You rank on page one and a competitor is in the AI Overview instead

Rankings are stable and clicks are falling, which reads as an SEO failure and is not one

Assistants describe your category accurately and reach for someone else's page to do it

Your best answer is in the twelfth paragraph, after a preamble about why the topic matters

Passages start with "as we saw above", so they mean nothing when lifted out of the page

You have FAQ schema on pages that do not contain the answers it claims

Our approach

How we drive compound growth.

Answer first, qualify second

Most business writing builds to a conclusion. That is exactly the wrong shape for extraction, and reordering usually beats rewriting.

Passages that survive isolation

Every passage has to work with no surrounding context. We read them aloud on their own, because that is how a retrieval pass will use them.

One change, six surfaces

Assistants, AI Overviews, AI Mode, featured snippets and voice all reward the same structure. AEO is unusually good value for that reason.

Honest about where it stops

AEO decides whether you are usable once retrieved. It does not decide whether you are retrieved. We say so before you buy, not after.

Why now

Why the shape of the writing matters more than the volume

For twenty years the output of a query was a list and the user chose from it. Increasingly the output is one composed answer, and the user does not choose at all.

  • Selection is passage-level, not page-level, so a buried answer loses to a clearer one on a weaker site
  • A section that answers three questions cannot be cleanly extracted for any of them
  • Context-dependent phrasing breaks extraction: an extracted passage no longer has the context
  • Comparison and pricing content is re-retrieved often, so a stale page loses to a current one
  • Tables extract readily; prose descriptions of tabular data extract badly
  • More pages saying the same thing dilutes rather than compounds, because there is no ranking function to feed

What we cover

What the work consists of

Answer-first restructuring

Move the answer into the opening passage of its section and put the qualification after. Reordering, not rewriting, on the pages that already rank.

One question per section

Split sections that cover several things, so each can be pulled for the question it actually answers.

Removing context dependence

"As noted above", "this approach", "the second option". Every one of these makes a passage unusable once lifted.

Question-shaped headings

Headings in the words a buyer would use rather than internal labels, so the matching pass finds the right section.

Tables where the content is tabular

Comparisons, specifications and tier structures. Answer engines extract these readily and lose them in prose.

Structured data that matches the page

FAQPage and Article markup reflecting what is genuinely there. Schema describing content the page does not contain is worse than none.

How it works

How an AEO engagement runs

01

Find the pages worth working on

The ones that already rank for questions an answer engine triggers on. Working on pages that rank nowhere is the most common wasted effort here.

02

Locate the answer in each

Read the page and find the paragraph that answers the query. Where it sits is usually the whole problem.

03

Reorder before rewriting

Answer, then qualify. Most pages already contain the right words in the wrong order.

04

Break the context dependence

Every passage read on its own, out loud, with no other context. If it does not stand up, it will not be used.

05

Fix the markup to match

Structured data reflecting what is actually on the page, following Google's published specification.

06

Track and iterate

Overview and snippet capture measured continuously, because a point-in-time check on an unstable surface tells you nothing.

Why Surge45

Why SaaS teams choose us.

We start with what already ranks

Ranking is the prerequisite on Google's surfaces. A thin new page written for an overview usually gets neither.

Reordering over rewriting

Cheaper, faster, and it is what the problem usually actually is.

We say where AEO stops

It decides whether you are usable once retrieved, not whether you are retrieved. That second question is mostly off-site.

Schema that matches the page

Markup claiming content a page does not contain is worse than no markup at all.

Measured on the right surface

Overview and snippet capture tracked continuously rather than checked once.

Your team keeps the pattern

The house style is written down, so new content ships correct instead of being retrofitted.

FAQ

Questions teams ask.

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

The overlap is real and worth being honest about. Good SEO content practice already favours clear structure and direct answers. What AEO adds is the constraint that a passage must work with no surrounding context, which changes how you write far more than it changes what you write about. Roughly two thirds of this is work you should have been doing anyway.

Should we buy AEO or GEO?

They are not alternatives. AEO is the content layer; GEO is the whole discipline including retrieval, entity clarity, off-site citation sources and measurement. Buy AEO alone if your diagnosis is specifically that you rank but are not extracted. If assistants are not naming you at all, AEO will not fix it.

How long does it take?

Restructuring a page that already ranks can change overview capture within a few weeks. If the page does not rank, the timeline is however long conventional SEO takes for that query, because ranking is the prerequisite.

Will being extracted bring traffic?

Less than the equivalent conventional ranking, because an overview answers the question on the results page. It is worth pursuing for presence in the answer, and it should be reported as brand exposure rather than as a traffic channel. A team that budgets for it expecting sessions will conclude the work failed at the moment it started working.

Do we need to rewrite the whole site?

No, and you should not. The work concentrates on the pages that already rank for questions that trigger an answer surface. On most SaaS sites that is a few dozen pages, not the whole estate.
